This is my first worship song to be used in a public setting, and like many of my songs went through a number of near-complete re-writes before ending up in its current form. During the critiquing process a lyric: 'forsaking your dignity' was challenged because it was considered that even on the cross Jesus still maintained his dignity in the midst of sacrifice. Having tried a few alternatives I eventually settled on 'scarred for eternity'; as based on the evidence of Jesus' post-resurrection appearances and references to 'the Lamb that was slain' in Rev. 5, it seems true that Jesus will forever bear the marks of his sacrifice for us. What an amazing and humbling thought.
King of all kings
Rev 5:6; Phil 2:5-11; Matt 27:27-31; Jas 1:2; Eph 2:8; 2 Cor 5:17-19; Rom 8:17;
King of all kings, crowned with our shame,
Lord of all lords, robed in humility.
Ruler of all, pierced with our pain,
Almighty God, scarred for eternity.
I bow down at the foot of the cross,
in awe of this:
Grace so amazing,
grace undeserved,
grace reaching out and bringing heaven's love to earth.
It's your grace that gives me life,
for you broke the power of death
and I'm reconciled to God for evermore
because of this amazing grace.
Now that I live, I live for you,
all that I am, I give as an offering.
Your righteousness I will pursue
count it as joy to share in your suffering.
I lay down my whole life at the cross,
in awe of this:
