Throughout the Gospels, faith or the lack of it seems to be hugely important to Jesus. He made statements such as 'your faith has made you well', 'I have not found such great faith even in Israel', 'have you no faith?' and so on. He also makes challenges such as 'if you have faith as small as a mustard seed...' and 'anyone who has faith... will do greater things than these'. We even read that didn't do many miracles in his hometown because of the lack of faith of the residents. I found these verses hugely challenging and set out to write a song encompassing some of these themes, seeking to balance a desire for more faith with the reality of how life is at the moment, without slipping into either a naïve 'name it and claim it' kind of faith, or depressed cynicism. I hope that churches will be able to use the words of this song as a prayerful cry for God to raise our faith levels and believe for greater things in him.
Lord, you promised
Mark 10:27; Mark 9:24; John 14:12; Jas 5:15; Eph 2:8; 1 Cor 4:20; Matt 17:20;
Lord, you promised if we speak in faith
we'll see the mountains move,
your power will make our pathways straight.
Lord you promised if we live by faith
we'll do the things you did
all for our Father's praise.
Yet in our lives we don't see all you have promised,
help us to believe, help us to believe,
Lord we're calling out increase our faith,
so that your kingdom's power will be displayed,
in all we do and not just what we say,
Lord would you release your gift of faith we pray.
Lord, you promised if we pray in faith
we'll see the sick restored
as we call on your mighty name
Lord in everything you will prevail
so we can trust your word
for it will never fail.
Nothing is impossible for you, Lord,
nothing is impossible for you.
May our doubting hearts believe the truth that
nothing is impossible for you.
