It's your turn! 12 Song Challenge

Posted at 05:01am on 5th January 2016

12 Song Challenge

Joel and Sam, while presenting our new podcast, have set themselve the challenge of writing 12 new songs in 2016, using different approaches and techniques each month. It should be fun. But we want loads more people involved.

Are you a songwriter, writing worship songs for your church? Want to take on a challenge, develop your skills, maybe even create something wonderful? Then join us!

Every month we'll present a new challenge on the podcast. We'll also flag it up on facebook, twitter and in our email newsletters. Together, we'll take it on, and see what happens. Send us your attempts (rough recordings will do), post them on our facebook wall, tweet us, etc. We'll discuss our experiences on the podcast, and look at some of what you have written too. We won't manage to cover everything, but we will try to pick out a couple each month. If you struggle, tell us why. If you succeed, tell us how. We want to know your songwriting experiences.

Here's how to join in:

a) Email us saying you want to take part. We'll add you to a list to receive a new challenge each month.

b) Follow the podcast to hear how it's going for everyone, and for more explanation of the different processes and techniques.

c) Send us the results if you want to!

JANUARY CHALLENGE: SCRIPTURE SONGS

The challenge for January is to write a song from a piece of scripture. Not just inspired by the Scripture, but drawing fully on it. Delving in to find a verse that becomes a chorus, other content that forms the verses. A refrain, a structure, a form. A meditation, a celebration, a story telling. More than a memory verse. The kind of song that, allows us to worship God in the moment but also take away with us the resonating truths of God speaking through his word.

We're limiting this to just 5 passages, so that we all have to write something new.

Romans 11:33-36 (Joel's doing this one)
John 14:5-21 (Sam's doing this one)
Jeremiah 6:16
Revelation 15:3-4
Hebrews 12:18-29

Have fun!
